Dry Sander and dust extractor system

  • SANDER SYSTEM
  • (Revision 1 Dated 12 November 2025 RCWB Rear Commodore)
  • The sander and dust extractor system ('the system') is available to club members who have undertaken basic instruction with one of the clubs 'sander champions'. The system can be used for a number of dry boat preparation tasks, but the systems primary purpose is to manage waste products that result from preparing antifouled hulls and reduce the risks of this getting into the water course and/or damage human health. The Club has a limited supply of good quality sanding disks which can be purchased at cost via an honesty system (details below). At the time of writing this is £1 for 5 disks, there is no fee for using the system.
  • System Storage The sander, its ancillary components, a 25m extension cable and the honesty box are all stored in a large grey locked box located on the shelf below the Green Shed work bench ('the box'). The code for the padlock is 1885. All items must be returned to the box after use and the box kept locked. Do not allow children or untrained users to use the system
  • This guide is written to help members with the system. It is split into two sections which must be read before use;
  • A. 'The sander' (Devmott DEV003)
  • B. 'The extractor' (Trend T33a)
  • By booking the system out the user acknowledges that they are using the system at their own risk and have 1. Undertaken basic training 2. Have read and understood this guide and the individual instruction booklets for the sander and extractor.

  • Sander champions Are able to provide basic instruction and advice. They are:
  • 1. Richard Babbage (Rear Commodore). 07456520785
  • 2. Kevin Blackmore

  • DO NOT get the sander wet or use in damp or wet locations or areas where there is condensation.
  • DO NOT allow untrained persons to operate the sander
  • DO NOT operate the sander when you are tired or under the influence of alcohol, drugs or intoxicating medication.
  • DO NOT use the sander where there are flammable liquids, solids or gases such as paint solvents, etc.
  • DO NOT leave the sander unattended.
  • DO NOT carry the sander with your finger on the power switch.
  • DANGER! Please ensure that wind conditions are low and dust is not going over neighboring vessels and/or others around you. Keep all persons and pets away from the work area. The following are particularly vulnerable to the effects paint dust: Expectant women, babies and children. Children and pregnant women MUST NOT enter the work area.
  • DO NOT eat, drink or smoke in the work area. When not in use, unplug from the mains power supply and store in the locked sander box
  • WASTE DISPOSAL Ensure that all waste is taken away from the Club and disposed of in sealed bags or containers, according to local authority regulations.
  • SANDING ANTIFOULING PAINT The sander may be used for smoothing and preparing already painted areas and other hard surfaces including wood. It is not intended to be used for stripping back significant layers of old antifouling paint to bare hull ('stripping back'). If you are stripping back then you must scrape off the majority of old paint first before using the sander to prepare your hull/substrate. A tungsten blade scraper with an extraction capability is recommended for stripping back. If done dry, the scraper can be used in conjunction with the extractor to significantly reduce dust and scrapings Please speak to the Sander Champions for advice Antifouling is generally very soft and sands poorly. Move the sander around in a circular pattern and use lower speeds to avoid overheating and clogging up disks. TIP - It is advisable to do a trial run on a scrap piece of material or small area to determine the optimum grades of sandpaper for a particular job.
  • DO NOT continue to use worn, torn or heavily clogged sanding discs. Ensure foreign objects, such as nails and screws, are removed from the workpiece before starting to sand.
  • DO NOT use a sanding disc on wood or GRP that has previously been used on metal. This may cause scouring on the surface.
  • DISKS
  • TSC Sanding disk stock You are welcome to purchase your own compatible 150mm disks. However there are 2 grades of high quality ceramic disks located in the sanding box 80 g and 120g They can be purchase at a current cost of £1 for 5 disks. Please place cash in the honesty tin located in the sanding box. Please advise the Rear Commodore if stocks are running low.
  • Fitting / removing disks · Remove any dust or debris from the hook & loop sanding base before fitting a sanding disc.·
  • Match the holes to enable proper extraction and simply press the disc to the base to attach it.· To remove the disc, peel it away from the base. To maximise the life of the hook & loop sanding base, peel the sanding disc off slowly rather than rapidly removing it to avoid damage to the hook and loop system.
  • WARNING: Take care to regularly clean out the build-up of dust on the base underneath the sanding disc and not to let the disc wear completely down before replacing it. Failure to observe these two precautionary measures can lead to damage to the hooks and loops on the base, and the sanding disc will not attach properly.
  • WARNING: Never use the sander unless the entire base is covered by the sanding disc.

  • DUST EXTRACTION (See guide below ref. Extractor) Always connect the sander to the Extractor
  • WARNING: Take special care to guard against harmful and toxic dusts when sanding painted surfaces, woods and metals, particularly if you are unsure about the exact substances involved. All persons entering the work area must wear a RPE (see above)
  • CONNECTION / STARTING The sanders dust extraction port has a short length of narrow tube with the power lead cable zip tied to it. This connects to the main 5m dust extractor tube which has a suitable connection adaptor in the sanding box. Check all connections are secure before use. Connect the sander to the power socket on the dust extractor and press the power button on the sander which will show the speed selected (1-7). This will also engage the automatic start which will then start the extractor when the sander is operated via its top trigger switch. Adjust the rpm speed by using the rpm+ & rpm- Once the desired speed is set, push down the top lever and the tool will start slowly, then quickly get up to speed, ready to use. Move the machine in a circular motion over the workpiece surface, applying an even, moderate pressure until you reach the desired surface finish. Excessive pressure does not lead to a faster removal of material; it will, however, lead to premature wear of the sanding disc, and may cause damage to the machine. TIP Try to keep the sander flat on the work surface in use. Be mindful that curved surfaces with significant radius will compromise the extraction efficiency Always clean the tool THOROUGHLY when switching from sanding wood to sanding metal, and vice versa. Use the extractor hose to help you do this.
  • WARNING: DO NOT touch the moving sanding disc. use clamps to secure any workpiece to the workbench wherever possible.
  • WARNING: Always wait until the machine has stopped vibrating completely before putting it down. Always disconnect the power supply after use.

  • CLEANING Clean the body of the sander with a soft brush, use the extractors brush attachment for this Water must never come into contact with the tool. Ensure the tool is thoroughly dry before using it.
  • STORAGE Store the sander in the sander box and lock it when finished
