There was discussion regarding the Tinley Bowl event. It had not been supported for the last two years and it was suggested that perhaps the event should be changed to a ‘crew helm race’ rather than a ‘lady helm race’. The ladies present would like to continue the event but asked if the event could be incorporated with another race at sea or indeed a coastal passage race. It was agreed to investigate options and report back to the spring meeting.

PR & Committee |

The existing Fleet representatives had all agreed to stand for a further 12 months. All were willing to stand down if others wished to take on the role. There were no volunteers to replace them. They were re elected unamiously.
John Baynes proposed a vote of thanks to the committee for all of their efforts throughout the year and for their ability to keep the racing a close fought contest right up to the last race of the season.

Yard Marshal’s Report |
4.1 |
Bill Rickets thanked cruiser owners for their co-operation on recovering the first 8 boats. Others will follow so long as owners are ‘willing & able’ to be recovered. He stressed that this was a self help operation that was dependant on the tides and weather conditions. It was hoped that all cruisers would be recovered on one set of tides. (before 12th October 2006)

Bill Ricketts yet again needed to remind members to mark their gear to ease identification of items found in the yard.

Launching for the 2007 season will commence earlier than usual to allow some repairs to be undertaken to the yard surface. Bill explained that there were a few ‘trip hazards’ and areas that were breaking up that required attention. Additional drainage will also be incorporated into the repairs. Cruiser owners to note the early launching date when fitting out. (17th March 07 is the start of suitable tides for launching)

PR sought the views of those present on the possibility of a 4th fleet for ‘lightweight’ cruisers. JB advised that there were a few of these craft were for sale and there may not be enough in 2007 to warrant their own fleet. It was agreed to review this at the spring 07 cruiser meeting.

JB had received information to support the view that a single boat could be classed as a starter in a race series. Lively debate followed from the floor. By adopting the rule it was felt that it would avoid the chance of only one boat turning out as others would feel obliged to race. Proposed by John Baynes – Seconded Tim Baker. All present, except one, were in favour. PR to adjust the Sailing Instructions accordingly.

The meeting was advised that for the 2007 season the Yawl fleet will revert back to having their own starting sequence 10 mins before the cruiser start.
6.4 |
JB wished the meeting to consider introducing a local rule to ensure that those who ranked as starters in the starting area had every intention of ‘racing’ and not just to start and retire. It was felt that this would be impossible to police and was rejected.
6.5 |
Members were reminded to remove their ensigns at their 4 minute time. This indicates to others that you are ‘starting’ and it is hoped that others not ‘racing’ would ‘keep clear’. You are ‘racing’ from your 4 minute signal (prep)

Following an article in Tops’l regarding racing after sunset a number of members expressed their views. In essence the article suggested that the risks of personal injury associated with close quarter racing in confined waters were far greater in the dark and suggested that perhaps the club should introduce a rule to ensure competitors wore lifejackets with lights as a minimum requirement.
Some members felt that despite the onus being on the individuals the way in which the evening series results were handicapped there was a ‘need’ for boats to compete to the end of the series to ensure they could win the series. Racing after dark ‘moved the goalposts’ and should not happen.
The Fundamental Rules of racing cover these aspects of safety afloat. The onus is on the individual to wear a lifejacket. The boat (skipper) must decide weather to race in the given conditions.
6.7 |
The race held on Thursday 21st Sept 06 proved to be a challenge for some as the winds were very strong. It is feasible that the Committee Boat could fly flag ‘Y’ and require crews to wear lifejackets or indeed abandon the race. Some members would object to being ‘forced’ to wear lifejackets and some enjoyed the strong wind sailing and would be disappointed if the race was abandoned.

A suggestion was made that the Committee boat records the start time of each boat rather than ’seconds late’ to avoid doubts. All in favour. PR to alter the race officer instructions etc.

AWR noted that the club result book is a historical document recording the club events. He requested that the results of all racing be recorded in the book. This was agreed that this is normal practice and will continue. Some ‘missing’ results will be appended.
