What is the Exe River Regatta Project? As you may be aware the River Exe Regatta has become a fixed annual event on the river. It has proved a very popular and successful event. Over the years the Regatta has made a small profit. Initially the proceeds of each event were held in reserve to underwrite the costs of each successive event. However the funds have risen and over the last few years the regatta committees have been considering how the capital accumulated could be used to the benefit of the participating clubs. These deliberations have lead to the formation of ‘The Exe River Regatta Project’.
The objective of the project is to act on behalf of the combined sailing clubs of the River Exe to promote the sport of sailing on the Exe and to provide a source of funding for specific training to encourage such activity. The funds will be specifically used to increase the numbers and expertise of those who are or who wish to become actively involved with the organisation and management of the sport on the river. The full constitution is available on the new Exe Regatta website www.river-exe-regatta.org.uk The committee fund was given an initial balance of £2000 from River Exe Regatta proceeds with a further single payment of £1000 from the RYA South West Regional Committee. In the first year total grant assistance was ‘capped’ to a maximum of £1500. Individual grants will be ‘capped’ to a maximum of £250. The committee will have the discretion to grant up to the full price of a course but this will be seen as an exception. Within the criteria for grant allocation the Project will have full regard to Equal opportunities legislation and good practice. How do I apply? Written applications for grants must be made using the application form to a project committee member. Applications are open to all. Only in exceptional cases would a grant be awarded to a person who was not a member of a participating club. There is no age limit for applicants however all applicants will be expected to demonstrate their commitment to promoting the sport of sailing on the river. Application for grants may be made by an individual or on behalf of one of the participating clubs, e.g. an individual may apply for £100 to attend say a senior instructor course, or a club training centre principal may apply for a grant of £250 to subsidise a course. The project committee, who will meet twice a year (Spring & Autumn), consists of 5 members with representatives from each of the participating clubs, usually the four past chairs of the Exe Regatta and the treasurer. 2009 Committee Members are: Topsham Sailing Club Tim Baker Starcross Yacht Club Liam McGrath Lympstone Sailing Club Rosemary Maltby Exe Sailing Club Rex Frost Treasurer Stewart Price If you wish to broaden your experience, gain a relevant qualification and can make a commitment to bring those skills and experience back to the river, contact your committee member and make an application. Application forms are available from the regatta or any of the club websites.
